Even If This Love Disappears Tonight Review: Be Ready To Cry Your Eyes Out

Emotional movies are not really my thing. I usually avoid watching films that might make me cry. But the Japanese movie Konya, Sekai kara Kono Koi ga Kietemo really caught my attention, and I wanted to watch it. Sadly, no streaming service in India had the movie, so I decided to opt for the Korean version instead and as expected, I loved it. Maybe it is because the film has a distinctly Japanese feel, or maybe I was simply missing a good teen movie, and this gave me everything I wanted to see. Teen romances are always sweet because they are filled with innocence, shyness, awkwardness, anxiety, and cheerfulness. Young-love is my go-to comfort watch whenever I need a break from the usual. Even If This Love Disappears Tonight may be an emotional film, but it is not a complete cry fest. It has a strong first half and a decent second half. The movie captures a wide array of emotions and makes you feel for the characters as if you know them personally. Over its 106-minute runtime, I experienced all kinds of emotions that eventually brought tears to my eyes by the end. I cannot wait to share my thoughts on this movie, so read on as I tell you all about it.

Even If This Love Disappears Tonight Review

Han Seo Yun (Shin Shi Ah) is a high school girl who loses her memories every time she falls asleep, a secret known only to her parents and her best friend, Choi Ji Min (Jo Yoo Jung). One day, a boy named Kim Jae Won (Choo Young Woo) proposes to her on a dare to keep his bullies away. Surprisingly, she accepts the proposal and agrees to date him, hoping to experience love like a normal girl. What begins as a fake relationship slowly turns into something painfully real as the two young lovers navigate memory loss, hidden illnesses, and the fragile beauty of young love.

I Enjoyed Watching ‘Even If This Love Disappears Tonight’ Because…

…it is a sweet teen love story at heart. Boy meets girl, girl meets boy, and what follows is a cute, happy romance. There is no manipulation or mind games, just two people learning about each other and falling deeper in love with each passing day. Seo Yun wakes up every morning with no recollection of the previous day, so she keeps a diary in which she records everything that happens so she can catch up and live normally. When she starts dating Jae Won, her diary is filled with moments they share together, along with her growing feelings and love for him, which is incredibly heartwarming. She essentially falls in love with the same guy every single day, and that is such a beautiful thought. When Jae Won learns about her condition, he puts in all his effort to ensure that every day she spends with him is a happy one. Imagine living each day trying to make your partner happy, knowing that they will eventually have no recollection of anything you did for them.

For a story this moving, the leads needed to have great chemistry, and actors Young Woo and Shi Ah did a wonderful job. The teenage couple goes on regular dates, visiting aquariums, fairs, and doing all the usual things you may have probably seen in other teen romances. But what makes this experience memorable is the warm, comforting chemistry between Seo Yun and Jae Won. He is reserved, while she is cheerful and bubbly. She may not remember anything from the previous day, but she clearly enjoys Jae Won’s company, which leaves the viewer feeling delighted.

The leads deliver sincere and restrained performances, because of which even the quieter moments feel engaging. It is also a testament to the film’s direction that, as a viewer, you feel drawn to even the most ordinary scenes, despite being able to guess what is most likely to happen next. The cinematography closely resembles that of Japanese romantic films, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. The warm lighting and soft music add to the authentic Japanese feel of the movie.

I Did Not Like ‘Even If This Love Disappears Tonight’ Because…

…it was far sadder than I expected it to be. The climax came as a complete shock; when the ending hit, it hit so hard that I found myself trying to make sense of what had happened while struggling to keep my emotions in check. It is a testament to the film’s storytelling that I cried as if I personally knew the characters. I had no idea this movie was going to be such a tear-jerker, or I probably wouldn’t have watched it. I had only seen a few snippets of its original Japanese version and had liked the leads there as well, so I assumed it would be a comforting young-love story. Sadly, it left me with a lot of pain by the end.

Even If This Love Disappears Tonight is a good watch, minus the ending. With a talented cast and dreamy cinematography, the film delivers the warm, fuzzy feeling that is often expected of a teen romance. It tugs at your heartstrings, and if you are comfortable with an emotional storyline, this one is definitely for you.

I give Even If This Love Disappears Tonight a rating of 3.5 out of 5. My only issue is with the ending, the rest of the film is sweet, cute, and full of heartfelt moments. It is totally worth watching if you can handle emotional content.
