Show Title: Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 is a revenge cum romantic drama starring Barun Sobti, Shivani Tomar and Ritu Shivpuri. The show is about Advay Singh Raizada whose parents were unjustly killed and he is back in town seeking revenge from the people who betrayed his family. I have been waiting to watch this show and after catching up with the first episode this is my first impression of it.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 (2017)

Episode 1

The show starts with Advay Singh Raizada (Barun Sobti) taking a dive in a swimming pool to rescue a little puppy. A girl cheers him for saving the puppy while the little one happily follows him sniffing his feet. Advay takes the puppy in his hand and says, “Meri zindagi mein maasomiyat ki, pyaar ki, koi jagah nahi hain” (There is no place for innocence and love in my life) (Huh!?!? The cute little puppy was only appreciating your gesture. Why did you scare him with your broody dialogue?) He then slides his guitar back on his shoulders, puts on his glares and starts walking. In a voiceover, we hear him say that his father was killed before his eyes and we see a scene of a man being stabbed to death in front of a huge crowd. Advay then says that his mother was burnt alive and we see a few people beat a woman and we some voodoo dolls. The woman is then drenched in fuel and is burnt alive. (Oh shucks, his mother was believed to be a witch.) Advay continues that the fire has doused but not the one burning in his heart. He says he will burn and with him will burn Chandani Narayan Vashisht. He then says, “Welcome to hell Chandani”.

Then we see the shows’ female lead Chandani (Shivani Tomar) who is giving instructions to a house help to lift the chandelier a little higher. She recalls her friend Dev telling her that a chandelier is always supposed to be 12 feet above the ground. She muses that Dev taught her a lot of things but not how to forget him. She says she still misses him and cheerfully walks on as she opens the lid of a soft drink bottle with her teeth (I suppose Dev taught her that too) like some rowdy young boy and takes a sip of it when a house help reminds her that it is time for the maha aarti and she suddenly seems nervous hearing about it.

We then see an elaborate celebration taking place in front of a humongous stone bust of Lord Shiva. As tonnes of milk is poured over the Idol women merrily dance in celebration. Then enters, Indrani (Ritu Shivpuri) who is respectfully greeted by all the women present. She then moves smearing gulaal (pink powder) on several women’s head. Some distance away, a woman, making a rangoli (sacred designs drawn on the floor with coloured powder) resentfully comments, “teen chidaiiya ek kahaani, do hain naukar, ek hain rani”. (Three birds one story, three are servants while one is queen). Just then, another woman, hopping on one leg, approaches her and asks her if she can now walk but the woman forbids her from doing so as there is still one minute to go for raahu kaal to end. The woman cribs that she will die if she waits another minute so the woman asks her to wait for just 60 more seconds and the woman happily agrees thinking that 60 seconds is less than 1 minute. The woman then asks when the door to the mandir will open and she replies that it will happen only when the Moon comes to its right place on the horoscope charts and the other woman laughs saying that the moon will not be able to open anything but it is Chandani who will get the door opened.

Cut to, Chandani walks aimlessly in her home where she recalls people taunting her and calling her names. She remembers how scandalised people were when she returned home after being missing for 3 days. Chandani then enters her father’s room where she sees her father looking confused over some shawls. She selects the fluorescent green shawl and helps him wrap it around his shoulders as he blankly looks back at her. He then rises from the bed and looks around for something when Chandani brings him his book and watch. He takes the book but looks reluctant to wear the watch. She says that if he does not wear the watch then ‘Yash Narayan’ will wear it. He looks unsettled and then outstretches his hand so she can help him wear the watch. As she helps him wear his shoes, he asks her who is Yash Narayan. She tearfully replies that ‘his’ name is Yash Narayan. She then quickly calls for the house help, Shilpa and instructs her to tell the driver that her father is now ready.

Her father then asks her how she knows about him and she tells him a few things about him that is known only to him and he is surprised that she knows so much about him. He then asks how she is related to him and she says she is not only his daughter but also his mother. She tells him that today is a very important day for him when a male voice interjects that it is an important day for her too. She turns to look at a bespectacled man look back at her.

Cut to, Indrani instructs the two women to exercise caution this time around at the maha aarti which is due 3 days later. She says that the temple doors open once in 16 years and that the mistake that happened 16 years ago should not be repeated at any cost and the two women obediently nod their heads. She says that if Lord Shiva wills then the door will surely open and this time they will even get their hands on that khajaana (treasure). The two women are sceptical about the door not opening and Indrani says that this time if the door does not open then the people will catch their sham and will know the truth about their family. The women are then worried about Chandani not stepping out of the house and Indrani firmly states that Chandani will certainly step out of the house at any cost.

Cut to, Chandani cries to the bespectacled man that she will not be able to step out of the house. She weeps that no matter how much she tries to forget the past, all of it comes back to her the moment she steps out of the house. The man tells her that she has to step out for her father’s sake and she hesitatingly walks towards to door as she remembers being chased and harassed by a man when she was a school girl. The man’s voice reverberates in her ears as she remembers him say that only she and he know that nothing happened between them. She then remembers jumping off a cliff as the scenes of those fateful three days keep haunting her and she clutches the door in fright unable to place a foot outside her house.

Meanwhile, a gigantic statue of Lord Shiva is being erected near the mandir when its framework begins to crumble and the statue is about to collapse. People run helter-skelter to avoid being crushed under the statue. Just then, Advay appears from nowhere and starts running in slow motion towards the statue. He grabs a rope and tries to hold the statue from falling but is instead dragged along with the statue. After some struggle, he manages to stop the statue from falling by blocking his foot at a temporary setup created at the foot of the statue. However, the force is too much for the temporary setup as it breaks and Advay struggles to singlehandedly hold a 50 feet long statue.

First Episode First Impression

Ok, saving that puppy from the pool was really funny only because of the way Barun dived like a pro-swimmer. Wish he had a better entry but anyway, he still looked good even if the scene was pakao (boring). Advay’s backstory reminds me a lot of the movie Shikari starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. In the movie, Govinda’s family is killed in a similar fashion and he returns several years later to avenge his family’s death. I am sure Advay’s story must be a lot different but I cannot help pointing out the similarity. I watched the show only to see my favourite, Barun Sobti back on television. Sadly, he was there only at the beginning and end of the first episode, so I didn’t get to see a lot of him but that’s ok for now. I am seeing actress Shivani Tomar for the first time and she looks good, acts well. Ritu Shivpuri still reminds me of ‘laal duppatte waali tera naam to bata’ but anyway, she looked good too. It will be interesting to see her in a negative avatar.

What looked nice?

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 Review

Barun Sobti 🙂 This guy has a great screen presence and totally rocks the rude, bad guy character. I think he is perfectly cast for this wounded-guy-seeking-revenge role. Barun has still a lot of scope in comedy but romance is what suits him the best. I am looking forward to seeing his character develop in the show.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 ReviewShivani Tomar (I almost typed Chandani Tomar… the name Chandani suits her that much) looks bright with a vibrant personality. She is being paired with Barun for the first time and though I too wanted Sanaya on the show I really don’t mind Shivani because from the show’s trailers and the first episode, I think she looks very promising. I hope her chemistry with Barun gets better with each episode.

What did not look nice?

The hideous makeup. Ugh!!! The show is not even a historical or mythological drama where producers take the liberty to deck the characters in heavy jewellery, extravagant costumes and loud makeup. Chandani’s eye makeup and that winged liner made me want to wipe my PC screen with a cotton ball fearing that her black kajal might stain my screen. Why? Why make female leads look so scary with such bad makeup? And why was Advay roaming around with a guitar on his back? I’m assuming he is a musician which is why he was at the hotel in the first scene. But if that’s not the case then please don’t tell me the guitar was just a prop to make him look cool. I can only wait and watch to confirm that. I also hated Indrani’s jhumka (earrings). It was atrocious. I suppose she is the negative character on the show but why, why, WHY make her look so bad?

This whole ‘hero winning the trust of the heroine only to take badla (revenge) from her’ concept is really very stale. If I’m not wrong then Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 2 also dealt with a similar storyline where the hero marries the heroine only to punish her and teach her a lesson. This show is also predictable. We all know that Chandani is innocent and Advay will have his revenge only to realise his mistake and return back to her and confess his love for her. The real shocker or twist will be when he comes to know that his parents were actually the negative people and it was Indrani who was right. Hehe. But I know that won’t happen so let’s wait and watch how the story unfolds.

Barun looks nice as usual and I am expecting him to nail it as Advay Singh Raizada. I am watching this show only for Barun as the story has nothing new for me.
