AKA Charlie Sheen Review: A Candid View Of The Fame, Pain, And Truth

Of all the September releases on Netflix, I was most excited to watch Charlie Sheen’s documentary series. This man was once the poster boy for scandals and controversies, and his life has been as shocking as it gets. For years, I read every piece of gossip about his tumultuous affairs, crazy addictions, and bizarre behaviour. So, I was dying to hear the full story straight from the horse’s mouth.

After watching the series, I can honestly say that substance abuse can turn even a decent man into a complete monster. Charlie had everything going for him: fame, fortune, and success. But he spiralled down that dirty rabbit hole, repeatedly sabotaging his life along the way.

What stood out most to me was his raw honesty. Despite all the mistakes, public meltdowns, and personal failures, Charlie is still here smiling, owning up to his problems, and sharing his deepest fears and insecurities. His story is a powerful reminder that celebrities are human too, with flaws, struggles, and vulnerabilities just like the rest of us.

aka Charlie Sheen is a raw and unfiltered Netflix documentary series that dives deep into the life of one of Hollywood’s most infamous figures. From his rise to stardom as a celebrated actor to his public fall driven by scandal, addiction, and controversy, Charlie Sheen opens up about his turbulent journey. With candid interviews, personal reflections, and some never-before-seen footage, the series offers a brutally honest look at fame, self-destruction, and the struggle for redemption.

I enjoyed watching ‘aka Charlie Sheen’ because…

…the actor came across as incredibly candid and honest about both the highs and lows of his life. His story starts with old home videos of him and his brother playfully recreating scenes from their father’s movies. It was clear from a young age that Charlie knew he wanted to be an actor. Luck seemed to be on his side as well; his striking looks helped him land role after role, eventually leading to his big break in the Academy Award-winning film Platoon, where he was just around 20 or 21 years old. After that, there was no looking back for this handsome hunk.

My personal favorite was Charlie’s brutally honest admission that he actually felt good about being more successful than his older brother. Now, that’s real honesty with a touch of cheeky confidence! 😊 He also shared interesting stories about his friendships with other Hollywood heavyweights like George Clooney and Nicolas Cage, giving the series a fun behind-the-scenes vibe.

With fame and cash flowing in, it all went to his head, and he began thinking he was untouchable, like nothing could ever catch up with him. And that’s where his addictions started to take over his life. The docuseries then delves deeper into his battles with substance abuse and his path to recovery.

Overall, I really appreciated how the docuseries did not shy away from showing both the glamorous and messy sides of Charlie’s life, making it feel refreshingly real and relatable. You can see on his face how difficult it must be to revisit the toughest periods of his life, yet he does it with his signature cheeky smile, which only adds to the charm of the series.

Interviews with his family and friends provide a glimpse of the real Charlie behind the Hollywood persona. At one point, his ex-wife, Denise Richards, becomes emotional, admitting how much she still loves him. It’s clear to viewers that, stripped of his addictions, Charlie is a genuinely decent man, his struggles simply overshadowed that. In fact, if you watch the series, notice how he smiles the widest when talking about Denise. You will see genuine love there.

Even at sixty, his charisma is undeniable whenever he smiles. You can’t help but wonder how different things might have been if he had better self-control. Jon Cryer, his co-star, expresses a mix of awe and exasperation at Charlie being the highest-paid actor on television, despite his frequent absences from rehearsals and occasional appearances on set while intoxicated. It must have felt unfair at times, yet Cryer also knows that only Charlie could pull it off.

What made the docuseries especially enjoyable for me was this balance: it celebrated Charlie’s talent and charm while honestly confronting his flaws, making him feel like a real, multidimensional human rather than just a tabloid headline.

I DID NOT like ‘aka Charlie Sheen’ because…

…somewhere I felt maybe they could have done more. I don’t know what felt missing, but just two episodes were not enough for me. I wanted to watch morrrre.

Charlie’s charm, honesty, and behind-the-scenes stories made this documentary feel refreshingly real. The series beautifully balanced his talent, flaws, and personal struggles. My only wish was that it had more than just two episodes. I wanted much more.

I give ‘aka Charlie Sheen’ 3.5 out of 5 rating. This candid and unfiltered look into the life of one of the most charismatic and controversial Hollywood stars makes the show both compelling and memorable.
