Yup. I am a part of this ever-growing clan of drama fanatics. For me, a drama is the ultimate mode of escapism. That does not mean my own life is boring. Thankfully, it’s not. But through dramas, I get to experience emotions that I probably would not go through in real life. In the past two years that I have been binging on dramas, I noticed that dramas are therapeutic for me. Whenever I am going through a drama slump I feel low and restless. But the moment I dedicate some hours daily to watch a drama, the sun seems brighter every day. If books mean oxygen to me, then dramas bring more colour to my life. Here are some reasons why I feel watching dramas is a MUST for everyone.

1. Fights Depression

Depression has become as common as common cold now. From celebs to sportspersons to normal people to little kids no one is spared of this heart-crushing ailment. Battling clinical depression is no joke. But when you are a drama addict depression seems like an alien term because it is something that will never have a place in your life. How? In almost 85% of dramas, you will always see that the female lead is a poor damsel struggling to make ends meet. She may not be rich, beautiful or even intelligent but she will always have the determination to fight it out in life. She may go through hell in a drama but she will never give up on life. It is this positive attitude of hers that attracts our hot drama hero to her. Watching such a strong woman makes you feel ‘if she can, why can’t I?’.  For me, it’s Wakaba from Zenkai Girl who inspires me to confront every difficulty in life and fight it like a champion.

There are also some feel-good dramas that may not be totally logical but will give you that warm fuzzy feeling that will always bring a smile to your face no matter how you may be feeling in life. For me, the much clichéd rom-com, Cinderella and The Four Knights makes me smile even now. It is a completely nonsensical drama but I still like it a lot. On days when I feel low, I go back to dramas that I enjoyed watching the most and watch scenes that make me forget almost everything unpleasant in life.

2. Relieves Stress

Laughing is the best medicine to relieve stress. A hearty laugh can dissolve stress like an antacid in water. Getting involved in a good drama makes you forget the ‘real drama’ in your life. It ensures that you are detached from your real life for that one hour and get to share someone else’s life. I remember being so immersed in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo that after the end of each episode it would take me a few seconds to realise where I was. I felt something similar while watching Pride where I would have to remind myself that I do not live in Japan. Good dramas possess me and leave me feeling refreshed.

3. Promotes Exercising

Drama heroines are gorgeous. Even if they do not dress well in a drama they still look like a dream. That is because they take the trouble to be fit and slim. Watching these beautiful women on-screen inspires you to work harder on your own physique. There is even a drama ‘Oh My Venus’ on weight loss where we have the stunning Shin Min Ah reduce weight with the help of her hottie trainer, So Ji Sub. Now, you may not be lucky to have Ji Sub as your trainer but you can at least look as fit as her by working out, right?

4. Encourages Good Dressing

When you watch a drama like In Time With You, you are instantly driven to dress better, look better. Not all dramas are about the super-rich people. Some dramas show regular people living a normal life. But even while living a normal life, they dress good. Apart from wanting to eat noodles all the time after watching a drama, I also feel motivated to dress smarter only because I love the way these drama characters dress. Dressing well has never hurt anyone. If anything it has only benefited the dresser.

5. Makes You Ambitious

After watching career driven characters like Kim Bok Joo and Seo Jung who wouldn’t want to become successful in life? When you watch dramas with characters giving it their all to their profession, it motivates you to push yourself harder to achieve your dreams. It coaxes you to find your passion in life and give it your best shot.

Watching dramas does have its drawbacks such as unrealistic expectation from life and people, lack of activity due to binge-watching and some eye trouble because of constant exposure to blu-rays. But if you can control these effects on you then trust me, drama world is a beautiful place to dwell in. It is the best therapy for your mind troubles.
