Verity Review: CoHo Nails It With This Nail Biting Romantic Thriller

If you are a Colleen Hoover fan and intend to pick ‘Verity’ hoping to read a regular CoHo romance then you are in for a surprise. Verity is not a ‘usual’ romantic novel. Yes, it has plenty of romance but somewhere in the background, there is something mysterious lurking at every corner to give you enough chills to give leave you sleepless at night. A few scenes in the book still make me tremble with fright. I understand the sudden urge to look over your shoulder every now and then after watching a horror movie. But this is the first time that a book has thrown me in that kind of an eerie zone. Verity is an experiment by CoHo who wanted to see if she could dabble her pen in a slightly different genre. Since she wasn’t fully sure of it she only released the e-copy of her book. And I want to tell her that Verity is a mind-blastingly amazing read and here is what I liked and did not like about it.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Publisher: Hoover Ink, Inc

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

I LIKE Verity Because,

…I was blown away by this intense and gripping novel. I picked Verity because I read a lot of praise for it online. Also, I’m not new to CoHo romance so I knew that it would be worth my time. What I didn’t know was that it would stun me with it unexpected twists.

…CoHo’s try at a romantic thriller is indeed a successful attempt. Though not an ideal couple in the best of circumstances, I still enjoyed the brewing romance between Lowen and Jeremy. At the same time, I also felt utterly spooked on several occasions. CoHo’s created every scenario with great precision that will have the exact effect as intended. The romance will melt your heart while the suspense will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.

…thriller may not be my most favourite genre but when infused with abundant romance it only becomes a lot more interesting. Verity had me completely right from the first page. Everything that occurs in the book is unusual and that is its USP. The ending left me gobsmacked. I still don’t know if it was a good ending or a bad ending but it surely was a shocking ending.

I Do NOT Like Verity Because,

…nah! I liked it a lot.

Favourite Quotes in Verity

“And that’s what love at first sight is. It isn’t really love at first sight until you’ve been with the person long enough for it to become love at first sight.”

“I’m the awkward writer who posts a picture of my book and says, “It’s an okay book. There are words in it. Read it if you want.”

“A writer should never have the audacity to write about themselves unless they’re willing to separate every layer of protection between the author’s soul and their book. The words should come directly from the center of the gut, tearing through flesh and bone as they break free. Ugly and honest and bloody and a little bit terrifying, but completely exposed.”

“It’s what you do when you’ve experienced the worst of the worst. You seek out people like you…people worse off than you…and you use them to make yourself feel better about the terrible things that have happened to you.”

“Take care of your physical being. Feed it what it needs, not what the conscience tells you it wants. Giving in to cravings of the mind that ultimately hurt the body is like a weak parent giving in to her child. “Oh, you had a bad day? Do you want an entire box of cookies? Okay, sweetie. Eat it. And drink this soda while you’re at it.” Caring for your body is no different from caring for a child. Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes it sucks, sometimes you just want to give in, but if you do, you’ll pay for the consequences eighteen years down the road.”

“If an attraction is present between two people, those two people can only be one of two things. Involved or not involved. There is no in-between.”

Final View: Of all the Colleen Hoover books, I have enjoyed reading in the past, Verity is without a doubt my most favourite read. If you ever wish to read some good romance with some thrill to it then Verity is the perfect pick for you.
