Thirty-Four Going On Bride Review: My Most Favourite Chick-lit Series

And with this book, I finally say goodbye to the ‘Spinster’ series by Becky Monson. How much I adore this series! It was so much fun reading Julia’s crazy encounters in her daily life. Her thoughts resonated with me and I could connect with her like no other character. ‘Thirty-Four Going On Bride’ deals with Julia and Jared’s wedding preparations. Since this is Julia’s wedding you can expect complete chaos. With the entry of Jared’s ex-girlfriend matters only get tense for Julia and amusing for us. For me, the Spinster series ended with a real bang with this book.

Thirty-Four Going On Bride by Becky Monson

Julia Dorning is about to lose it. Between her over-the-top wedding that her sister, Anna, took upon herself to create, and the under-staffed popular bakery that she runs, she can barely find time to breathe.

All Julia ever wanted was a quaint wedding on the beach with family and friends. But now Julia has to contend with not only her sister’s plans, but those of her future mother-in-law, as well. Not wanting to step on anyone’s toes, especially her mother-in-law’s, Julia just goes along with it.

She can only take so much, though, and when her newest employee, Kate, makes things harder at the bakery, Julia has to find a way to simplify her life.

Can she do it or will she end up a basket case? Find out how she does it in this hilarious conclusion to the Spinster series!

I LIKE Thirty-Four Going On Bride Because,

…I could totally relate to Julia’s anxiety in this book. When I reviewed ‘Thirty-Two Going On Spinster‘ I had mentioned that I feel this book is more of my story. I am still in my twenties but I totally relate to Julia. And this book further cemented my belief. Julia suffers from anxiety which is something that bothers me too. The heart palpitations, the eye twitch and the constant feeling of restlessness are all signs of anxiety that Julia goes through and so do I. After reading this I understood why I could connect so much with Julia. It is because we think alike. Julia talks like me, behaves like me. For me, Julia is the most real and my most favourite chick-lit character.

…Julia and Jared are my new OTP. I loved their story and how real they were. Jared may be a romance novel hero but nothing about him is unlifelike. He seems like a very regular guy and it is completely the author’s writing talent that makes him such an endearing character. They are a perfectly balanced couple and I don’t think I will find another couple as perfect as these two anytime soon.

…the writing was funny just like the other books in this series. Author Becky Monson is a funny lady and this book clearly shows that. I especially enjoyed reading Julia’s thoughts for Jared’s hot ex-girlfriend. She is so cutely bitchy that I want to pull her cheeks.

I Do NOT Like Thirty-Four Going On Bride Because,

…it was too good. Ha! Just kidding! I love this book and the entire ‘Spinster’ series.

Favourite Quotes in Thirty-Four Going On Bride

“The suite is so big that there are two bedrooms, a master suite and a smaller room, both with full bathrooms. Jared takes the smaller room to get ready because, clearly, he loves me.”

“Don’t rub it in, Julia.” “I’m not. I’m confused. I mean, look at me,” I point to myself, “And look at you,” I point to her. She’s a flawless goddess in a skin-tight cocktail dress, and I’m all homeless junkie in a robe and headscarf.”

“It’s then that it truly sets in how awkward this situation is. I’m holding hands with my best friend while her George Clooney look-alike doctor gets ready to attempt to impregnate her. I mean, if this takes, what do you tell your kid? I got pregnant with you by the doctor while your aunty Julia was holding my hand because your dad couldn’t make it in time. This is so not normal.”

“Hi Lisa, can I help you?” I ask, trying not to convey the annoyance that she’s here while trying to make it clear that I’m busy. It’s not easy to do, and I feel my face moving from eyebrows raised to furrowed brow, back to eyebrows raised as my face fights expressions. I probably look like I’m having a seizure.”

Final View: I could not have asked for a better finale than ‘Thirty-Four Going On Bride’. The Spinster series by Becky Monson is a delightful read. Julia is someone you would like to befriend for her sense of humour and amusingly irrational apprehensions. Hop on this ride to have a good laugh.
